At home, we were more concerned with local issues
Naturally, I met people of influence
We decided to form a political party
It was called the Argentine Radio Syndicate; ARA for short
However, politics of a different kind were to change my life
In January 1944, an earthquake hit the town of San Juan
Up to 10,000 people were killed and many more injured
Juan Peron was the Secretary of Labor
He established an artistic festival to raise funds for the victims
As a well known entertainer, I was invited
Afterwards at the gala party, Juan Peron complimented me
It was January 22nd 1944 and the start of many conversations
About 2am the following morning we left the party together
It was the start of many nights that we would spend together
He was 48 years of age and I was 24
But, that did not matter to either of us
From the start, we knew it was more than a one night stand
Unmarried, we lived together
We both had what each other needed beyond the bedroom
Of course, priests, politicians and many other people disapproved
You may say that I was following in my motherâs footsteps
But, I had another dream
One that I could not share with anyone other than Juan
I wanted him to be President of Argentina
In return, he helped me become President of the Actors Union
Continuing my radio career, I often mentioned Juanâs work
The program, Towards a Better Future, supported his ideas
However, his opponents arrested him and put him in jail
On my radio program, I called on the people to help
On October 15th 1945, about 300,000 people marched
At the Casa Rosada, they chanted and demanded Juanâs release
I knew that I should speak to his supporters
Standing on the balcony, I spoke from my heart
âWe must act not just talk,â I said
âThe time has come to stand up for freedom and release Juanâ
The crowd cheered and marched on the residence of the President
Within two days, Juan was out of prison
The leaders of the unions ensured his release
They could have paralyzed the country with strikes
The President signed a decree to avoid that
In celebration, Juan and I were married October 22nd 1945
It was the day after his release
The official church ceremony took place a short time later
Clearly, Juan had many people on his side
On my radio show, I talked mainly to women
Previously, women had been ignored in politics
On the campaign trail I spoke at political meetings
It was then that I asked people to call me Evita
I told them that Juan could help them and their families
In addition, the unions supported him
That showed, when he was swept to power in the 1946 election
Suddenly, at the age of 27, I was the Presidentâs wife
As the First Lady, I took the duties very seriously
My first big tour was to the European countries
Ravaged by Germany, during the war, there was much poverty
In contrast, I was entertained in royal fashion by the leaders
The Spanish Government awarded me the Cross of Isabel the Catholic
It was their highest honor for a poor girl who had become rich
Yet in Spain, I noted the children running barefoot
Walking the streets I
